Oddero

Poderi e Cantine Oddero is a historical brand among Barolo producers. The winery’s roots go back to the end of the 19th century when their ancestors began to make wine under their own name. The wine cellar, located in the frazione Santa Maria of La Morra, is located on a natural terrace and overlooks the hills of Langhe. A modern winery with ancient roots, their wines are classic, with great respect to the terroir and the specific vineyard they come from.

The grapes used for the Nebbiolo are 15 years old, all around the winery in La Morra. The Nebbiolo ages for 1 year and a half in different sizes oak barrels, the profile is typical of La Morra area: delicate and floral on the nose, good acidity and very smooth tannins. Their Barbaresco comes from the vineyard Gallina, a well-known vineyard in Neive with a good amount of sand and marl. Aging takes place in 40Hl oak barrels, in a traditional style. The wine is refined, the nose has a good fruit component that will evolve with time, the structure is firm with good persistence. The Barolo Bussia comes from the plot Vigna Mondoca in Monforte d’Alba. At the highest point, the “backbone” of the vineyard, the soil is white, dusty, and poor in nutrients. In the summer it is prone to drought due to poor organic matter in the soil; it looks almost like the arid surface of the moon, its whiteness reflecting the sun. When the temperature rises, the vines often undergo stress due to lack of water, and it seems that only nebbiolo has the strength to grow here. The profile is extremely complex, already at 8 years of aging: highly floral, almost no fruit on the nose, besides some hints of small red berries, the balsamic component is already developed: mint, licorice and eucalyptus. The tannins are definitely assertive, with great length and elegance.

Many thanks to Isabella and Pietro Oddero for the tasting, our favorites were Barolo Bussia 2011 and Brunate 2012, which some lucky Oneonthehill Wine Club Member might receive with the October shipment!
